There are two main versions of the story about how Lord Ganesha got his elephant head:
Version 1: Protecting His Mother
Parvati, Shiva’s wife, created a young boy from turmeric paste.
She assigned him the task of guarding their home while she bathed.
When Shiva returned, he didn’t recognize the boy and, in a misunderstanding, severed the boy’s head.
Parvati was devastated. Seeing her grief, Shiva promised to find a replacement head.
He went out and found the head of the first living creature he encountered, which was an elephant.
Shiva placed the elephant head on the boy’s body, reviving him.
Parvati, though surprised, accepted her son’s new form.
Shiva named him Ganesha (“Lord of the Ganas” or elephant troops) and blessed him with wisdom and the ability to remove obstacles.
Version 2: Divine Choice
Parvati wanted a son, and Shiva agreed.
To choose the most auspicious head, Shiva sent Brahma (the creator god) out to find the head of the first creature he saw facing north.
The first creature was an elephant, and Brahma brought its head back.
Shiva attached the elephant head to Parvati’s son, blessing him with the name Ganesha and various divine qualities.
